What is the True Value of a TMC?

our response to the recent article from the Business Travel Magazine

A recent article from The Business Travel Magazine claims that Travel Buyers are finding it harder to convince their travellers about the value of using a Travel Management Companies (TMCs)…

The article paints a bleak picture of an industry struggling to keep pace with a fast-moving business travel environment. It claims that TMCs are often slow to react to retailing changes (such as the adoption of NDC) and lack the flexibility needed to meet evolving consumer demands.

TMCs are struggling to prove their value to clients, the author suggests, with restricted access to content and outdated travel technology shouldering much of the blame.

However, at Gray Dawes, we respectfully and heartily disagree…

After all, not all TMCs are created equally. Tarring everyone with the same brush only serves to devalue the brilliant work and innovative thinking that organisations such as ours bring to the industry and the benefits that a High Touch, High Tech, High Content service delivery model brings to corporate travel clients.

In this article, we take a deeper look at the “Value Proposition” piece from the Business Travel Magazine and demonstrate how we are genuinely doing things differently.

TMCs are not providing travel buyers with good enough access to content and the huge upheaval in the way airline fares are retailed via NDC and the slow pace of its rollout are partly to blame.

There’s little doubt that the introduction of the New Distribution Capability (NDC) in October 2012 was one of the biggest shakeups the industry has ever seen. It revolutionised the way air travel content could be presented and purchased – travellers and travel bookers no longer had to trawl through innumerable sources to find the air products they wanted.

However changing 40 years of airline distribution technology does not come without its pitfalls, and some TMCs have struggled to implement the retailing model into their ecosystems.

💡 Why Gray Dawes Is Different

We were early adopters of the NDC standard and have integrated it seamlessly into our systems. Our clients get access to supplier-direct fares and NDC content without being slowed down by clunky interfaces or a restriction of access.

While some TMCs might be hesitant to release content if their online booking tool (OBT) is unable to handle the volume or variety of fares, our YourTrip platform presents content from GDS, supplier-direct, NDC, Expedia, and Booking.com all in one place, without any friction.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for TMCs to demonstrate their value to clients, and travellers will try to find lower fares themselves.

The article cites a poll from a special ITM Buyer Knowledge Exchange Session which noted the key challenges faced by travel buyers:

  • 57% cited demonstrating the value of a TMC to stakeholders and travellers as a challenge.
  • 53% cited access to fares through their online booking tool (OBT) as a challenge.
  • 47% cited managing travellers who are price-checking and booking themselves as a challenge.

The piece suggests that TMCs, more than ever, are having to work overtime to prove why they are needed, and that travellers are becoming increasingly alienated. It points to a new crop of younger travellers who want to self-serve – a group who believe they can find lower fares and think they are doing the right thing.

💡Why Gray Dawes Is Different

When it comes to demonstrating value, our service offering speaks for us. The seamless integration of NDC content into our own retailing ecosystem shows travel buyers and bookers that searching for and securing the best fares does not have to be difficult. Everything they could ever need is clearly displayed and easily accessible all in one place – there’s no need for clients to shop around and we never hear “I can find it cheaper on the Internet”.

But it is important to remember that value is not only derived from the power of proprietary travel technology or the cheapness of fares. It is also gained by taking the time to understand the needs of a business traveller and reinforced by awesome customer service. Our High Touch approach to understanding our clients, their culture, and their business objectives allows us to craft tailored travel solutions and deliver unique experiences that go beyond monetary benefit.

The value of a TMC is determined by several factors, from the power of its technology to the content options it offers to clients. Not to mention outstanding customer service that’s ALWAYS ON.

At Gray Dawes, we’re there for our clients whenever and wherever they need us.

High Tech

Our travel technology can be accessed through our PORTAL platform via a single sign-on. Our online booking tool, YourTrip, delivers content from GDS, NDC, the web and more.

High Touch

Our innovative ‘follow the sun’ delivery model means we provide a truly ALWAYS ON service, caring for our clients around the clock – when they need us, where they need us.

d

High Content

We believe that content is king. That’s why we empower our clients with the freedom of choice, giving them everything they need to book better and spend smarter all in one place.

TMCs are slow to adapt to changes in the travel landscape and could struggle to keep travellers booking in-policy. Buyers might stick to traditional channels to maintain duty of care instead

The article suggests that travel buyers are increasingly choosing to book outside of policy to save money and maintain duty of care, the implication being that TMCs are not evolving fast enough in a post-NDC world and that they are routinely failing to deliver a service which a buyer couldn’t replicate themselves.

This is echoed by a quote from Kerry Douglas, Head of Programme at ITM: “Some buyers have started to make allowances for limited bookings to be made outside of the programme to accommodate direct cost savings.”

The failings of TMCs, including a lack of proprietary technology and seamless access to content, have created an environment in which travellers believe they are travel managers who can book better.

💡Why Gray Dawes Is Different

We also own our technology meaning that tools work seamlessly with one another and content is delivered across different devices unrestricted. Buyers don’t have to consider booking outside of policy because there’s no cost-saving or ease-of-access benefit to doing so.

Ian Currington, Director of Account Management & Client Implementation at Gray Dawes, suggests that the impression of TMCs as being slow to act and the touted increase in client apathy might be a result of other factors:

“The elephant in the room not mentioned is that the bigger corporates are clearly not putting enough pressure on tech suppliers to get the content flowing correctly. You have to ask yourself – is this a TMC problem or a technology problem?

“The way I see it is that increasingly as an industry we use far too many acronyms and talk so much about “NDC” and other concepts without considering whether the clients really care where the content comes from? It’s simple; they expect best value packaged with great tech and great service. And to us that equals Gray Dawes.”

Tarring all TMCs with the same brush only serves to devalue the brilliant work and innovative thinking that many organisations bring to the industry.

The article from the Business Travel Magazine paints a bleak picture of an industry in too broad a stroke. It depicts TMCs as slow to react to retailing changes and struggling to keep pace with consumer demands – an ailing service which is turning travellers into makeshift travel managers.

However, reality suggests otherwise. At Gray Dawes, we are genuinely doing things differently, and our High Content offering is stronger than ever. Some TMCs might be hesitant to release content if their OBT is unable to handle the fares seamlessly, but not us – our YourTrip platform presents fares from GDS, supplier-direct, NDC, Expedia, and Booking.com all in one place.

Access to content is also not the only driver of value. Being able to deliver a quality, personal service which ties great technology together with all-encompassing content, is just as precious to travellers and travel bookers.

“TMCs find themselves having to reassert their value to travellers and the feeling of déjà vu is palpable. The global pandemic was a successful exercise in doing that but two years later a new trigger – access to content – is causing concern.”

How the Paris Olympics 2024 will Impact Business Travel

and what you can do about it

Are You Travelling For Work During the Paris Olympics This Summer?

The Olympic Games are heading to Paris in July. Over 10,000 athletes will be throwing, swimming, running, cycling, and more for the chance to grab a gold medal and write themselves into the annals of Olympic history. For the Olympic surfers, this dream begins on the waves of Tahiti in French Polynesia – a break from tradition which sees an event held in a location beyond the host country’s borders.

It’s an exciting time to be a sports fan. And it’s an even more thrilling time to be a traveller – the Olympic Games is a beacon which attracts people from all across the globe, uniting disparate languages and beliefs into a single culture defined by healthy competition and the human affinity for fun.

But with an estimated 15 million visitors planning to head to the event according to the Paris je t’aime tourist office, travelling to and within Europe for work will almost certainly be affected. In this article, we take a look at how the Paris Olympics 2024 might impact business travel and offer our expert tips and advice to help you keep your trip on course.

Paris Olympics 2024 By Numbers

  • 15 Olympic venues
  • 11 Paralympic venues
  • 3.8 mile boat parade to open the event
  • 40,000 police officers to be stationed
  • 10,500 athletes
  • 329 events
  • 15 million tourists expected

1. Expect busier streets and more people using public transport systems

There are some reports which suggest 2024 will set new records for the number of visitors heading to Europe, with the Paris Olympics a major catalyst for travel to the continent. Record-breaking or not, one thing is guaranteed: the French capital will have to host an influx of visitors this summer and transport infrastructure will be stretched to its limits.

If you’re travelling for work in France during the event expect delays on the metro, buses, and trains, in Paris and its surrounding towns and cities, especially during peak hours and around competition venues. But it’s not only French streets that will be feeling the strain. Neighbouring countries like Spain and Germany could also see a rise in travellers and tourists as Olympic visitors extend their trips to other parts of Europe.

What can you do about it?

Consider flying into a less congested European city before travelling to Paris by train, making sure that you have all of the relevant identification and paperwork. Here are a few recommended destinations:

  • London: Eurostar train (2 hours)
  • Brussels: Thalys train (1 hour 50 mins)
  • Geneva: TGV Lyria high-speed train (3 hours)
  • Frankfurt: TGV INOUI high-speed train (3 hours 40mins)

2. Prepare for accommodation to be busier and more expensive

With millions of people expected to stay in Paris, the cost of accommodation will rise as providers leverage the popularity of the Olympics to increase profits. Available rooms in Paris are hot property – many hotel rooms and rental homes have already been snapped up by fans looking to make the most of their time at the Games.

According to analysis from The Independent and Lighthouse data, hotel occupancy in Paris is set to be between 60 and 70 per cent throughout the competition, with overall hotel rates roughly 95 per cent higher than usual. Neighbouring countries will also have half an eye on profits they can make from the event, so prepare to spend more at hotels across Europe.

What can you do about it?

Avoid staying on Sunday, 04 August. According to reports, that’s set to be the most expensive date to book a hotel during the event – The Independent reported that a five-star hotel room is averaging €1,566 (£1,349) per night.

If you’re a Gray Dawes client, you can get in touch with your dedicated team of travel experts who can find you rates that are cheaper than anywhere else on the internet. Find out how.

3. Keep an eye on the French Parliamentary elections and what might change

France’s parliamentary elections take place on 30 June, with “run-off” elections lasting until 07 July. Not only could this herald the beginning of an entirely new government, it might also cause unrest and uncertainty which could have a detrimental impact on travel.

Besides a potential change in governmental policy surrounding the travel industry (any of which is unlikely to be enacted in the short time between the election and the start of the Games), a big political change could cause disruption in the capital, whether that be because of an increase in media attention or politically-motivated tensions.

What can you do about it?

Though Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo says she has “difficulty understanding” President Macron’s decision to call an election so close to the Olympics, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach has assured fans that elections “will not disturb the Olympics”.

It would be wise to keep an eye on any political developments if you’re planning to travel to Paris on a work trip. That way you can prepare for any eventuality (or perhaps use the elections as an ice-breaker topic at your next business meeting!)

Greener Fleets & New Flights

In 2024, 28 new generation aircraft will join the ITA Airways fleet. This expansion represents a huge step forward in the carrier’s growth strategy which aims to lead the way to becoming the greenest airline in Europe in 2026. It’s a future that is already well on track – the goal is to have about 90% of the fleet made up of new generation aircraft which will lead to an average reduction in fuel consumption of up to 27% and a decline in CO₂ emissions.

Alongside these environmentally-friendly fleets is also a host of new routes which take ITA Airways passengers even further…

Riyadh

The new direct connection operates five times a week, departing from Riyadh every day except Wednesdays and Sundays, and arriving in Rome Fiumicino. The new route is operated with the technologically advanced Airbus A321neo. The opening of the new Riyadh – Rome flight marks a significant milestone for the airline, establishing connections to the Arabian Peninsula.

Accra

The new route will operate thrice a week, increasing to four times weekly in July 2024. Flights to and from Kotoka International Airport in Accra will be operated with the new Airbus A321neo, a new-generation, technologically advanced aircraft.

Chicago

In the current Summer 2024, the new direct Chicago – Rome connection will initially provide 6 weekly flights, increasing to 7 from June. Moreover,  new intercontinental destinations have opened this summer, including a Toronto to Rome nonstop. Overall, ITA will offer 140 weekly flights between North America and Italy in the peak of the season.

Airport In The City Programme

With Airport In The City, clients can check in and leave their hold baggage free of charge for all same-day ITA Airways flights. Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is one of the fundamental values at ITA Airways. It is pursued through concrete actions aiming to achieve a reduced environmental impact. An ambitious fleet renewal plan has been envisaged to encompass 90% of new generation aircraft by 2026: more modern, efficient, comfortable aircraft with CO2 emissions reduced by 25% compared to the previous generation of aircraft.

In addition, the availability of fuels that come from more sustainable sources such as SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) will help guide the transition of air transport from traditional fossil fuels to those of a biogenic nature. SAF, which is currently used on special flights, will gradually be used on the entire fleet.

In an agreement with CHOOOSE, a Norwegian company leader in climate technologies – ITA Airways can offer the opportunity to participate in offsetting the CO₂ emissions of a passenger’s flight, contributing to the implementation of certified projects that promote the natural and social environment and helping with the supply of SAF, fuel with reduced CO₂ emissions.

A New Traveller's Guide to Better Business Trips

our essential tips for budding business travellers

Welcome to the Exciting World of Business Travel…

As the common saying goes: “Travel broadens the mind”. It’s true. The experiences you have and the memories you make while visiting somewhere new will change the way you see the world and help you develop new work and personal skills.

Travelling for business can be a daunting prospect. You are expected to ingratiate yourself with people from different cultures and embrace new ways of working. But it is also a highly rewarding experience in which you might meet lifelong connections and find opportunities to advance your career.

In this article, we give our top tips to making the most of a business trip both before you leave and during your visit.

Before You Travel

A business trip starts long before you step foot on a plane. Success is built on proper planning, an understanding of your objectives, and a dash of research about your destination. Get your pre-trip preparations right, and you’re already halfway towards an experience you’ll never forget.

Pack Strategically

Always pack with efficiency in mind. Opt for a carry-on whenever possible, containing essential work items like your laptop, chargers, or any presentation materials. Pack clothing that is suitable for a range of different scenarios, for example you may want to dress differently in a work meeting than for a casual business dinner. Don’t forget to bring any location-specific items such as a universal adapter or paperwork which authorises use of certain medications. It is also wise to familiarise yourself with your airline’s baggage allowance policy to dodge any unexpected fees.

Research Your Destination

Take the time to study your itinerary. Where are you going to be, and when? Research your destination, including any cultural norms or business etiquette. How do the local business people greet each other? Are any topics of conversation considered taboo? Understanding these nuances, as well as learning a little bit of the language, can provide a huge boost to making a positive first impression. It is also important to figure out how you’ll get around when you arrive. To get a deeper insight into cities around the world and how to navigate them as a business traveller, check out our City Guide series

Prepare Mentally

While business travel can be exciting, it is often fast-paced and potentially stressful. Before heading off on a trip, prepare yourself mentally for what is to come. Recognise that travel may disrupt your routine, and work-related stressors can intensify. Planning for potential challenges helps mitigate the impact on your mental health. Develop a pre-travel self-care routine that includes activities that promote relaxation and stress reduction e.g. through meditation or an exercise routine. We wrote all about managing your mental health on a business trip if you are looking for more advice.

Loyalty Programmes

You’d be surprised with the amount of money you can save by earning loyalty points and rewards from travel providers. Most airlines offer tiered loyalty programmes which reward frequent fliers with free seat upgrades or airport luxuries. Hotels, too, often tease similar incentives that reward repeat guests. Don’t know where to start? At Gray Dawes, our dedicated team of travel experts will happily navigate you through what’s on offer, regardless of whether you fly every week or you only hop on a plane a few times a year. During Your Trip

So you’ve finally arrived at your destination. You’ve packed everything you need, you have your business meetings booked, and you’re looking forward to getting stuck into your trip. What’s next? There’s still plenty to consider even after you’ve turned up.

Beat Jet Lag

Jet lag is the unwelcome companion of long-distance travel. It can leave you feeling disoriented, sluggish, and battling sleep at the wrong times. But there are a few ways you can fight back. Start shifting your sleep pattern a few days before departure to gradually align it with your destination’s time zone. Go to bed and wake up earlier if travelling east, or later if travelling west. Hydration is also key. Up your water intake throughout your trip and avoid dehydrating beverages like alcohol and excessive caffeine. Finally, try to expose yourself to natural sunlight as soon as you arrive. Sunlight helps regulate your body’s melatonin production, otherwise known as the sleep hormone. Check out more jet lag busting tips here.

Get Networking

Business trips are goldmines for professional connections. They offer a chance to meet industry leaders and potential collaborators and help you to expand your professional network beyond your immediate circle. Connect with potential contacts on LinkedIn or other relevant platforms and actively engage in conversations. It is vitally important that you know the local business etiquette inside and out – don’t commit a social faux pas by overstepping a cultural boundary. For example, it is polite in Hong Kong to politely decline additional food or drinks from your host before accepting. It’s these seemingly small gestures that will help you stand out from the crowd.

Go Explore

Business trips can often feel like a blur of meetings and presentations but try to carve out some time to explore. Visiting a new place can be an eye-opening experience – a clash of cultures, a whirlwind of new sights and sounds, new food and drink to taste; travel can change your life. Visit famous landmarks and seek out hidden gems recommended by locals. Ditch the hotel breakfast one morning and explore local eateries to savour regional specialities instead. Experiencing everything you possibly can will give you a deeper understanding of the world around you. Remember to be careful though; don’t go out alone and avoid situations or locations that are unfamiliar.

Stay Connected

Travel is infinitely rewarding, but it can sometimes be lonely. As such, it is important to stay connected with your home office and your loved ones. Make sure to check in regularly with friends and family – maybe arrange a video call to show off the sights! They can help you blow off steam or support you if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the experience. Staying in touch with your colleagues at home is also essential. Provide regular updates on how meetings are progressing or let them know if there are any new tasks to action.  Cross-border business works best when communication lines remain clear. Establish channels of communication early and make sure that everyone is using the same apps or technology to stay in the loop.

In Conclusion

Travelling for business can be a daunting prospect for someone who has yet to experience it. However, a well-planned trip can be transformative in all of the right ways IF you know how to squeeze the most out of it. By following our top tips outlined in this article you will learn:

  • How to pack your bags more efficiently
  • What it takes to prepare mentally for a trip
  • How to reap the rewards of loyalty programmes
  • The best ways to beat jet lag once and for all.

Remember, business travel is an opportunity to not only represent your company but also to expand your professional horizons. With the right approach, you can almost guarantee that your trip will be a resounding success.

Hong Kong: A Business Traveller's Guide

your complete introduction to the city where East meets West

Travelling to Hong Kong?

Are you planning on travelling to Hong Kong for work? Get to know the Chinese city better in this comprehensive guide for business travellers.

Strategically located in South China, Hong Kong offers unparalleled access to the burgeoning Asian market and is often defined as the city where East meets West.

Colonial-era architecture stands proudly beside soaring modern structures, while ancient temples co-exist with bustling financial districts. This harmonious blend reflects Hong Kong’s fascinating history as a British colony that later transitioned to a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. As a result, Hong Kong boasts its own legal and economic system, offering a taste of the West with undeniable Chinese roots.

While Hong Kong operates at a fast pace, there’s a warmth and hospitality that shines through. The city boasts a well-developed public transportation system, making it easy to navigate – the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is clean and efficient and goes almost everywhere. Plus, with business interests extending from financial services and high-powered banking to technology and global shipping, opportunities are at an abundance.

In this comprehensive guide to Hong Kong for business travellers, we delve deeper into navigating the city’s unique corporate landscape, offer our top tips for getting around, and pick out our top 3 things to see or do to make your trip unforgettable.

Getting To Hong Kong

By Air (飛機)

Located on a man-made island called Chek Lap Kok, west of Lantau Island, Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) offers international flights and is well-connected to the city centre via Airport Express trains, buses, and taxis. The ultra-modern facility was even ranked 33rd best airport in the world in 2023 at the World Airport Awards.

By Road (車)

Driving to Hong Kong has been made largely redundant due to the city’s excellent public transport network. However, if you are planning on taking a car, an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home country’s license is required. You’ll also need to navigate border crossings from mainland China, requiring additional paperwork.

By Train (火车)

The high-speed Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link connects the city to mainland China on a service which can travel at speeds of up to 300km/h. The main terminus is the West Kowloon Station in Kowloon which lies right in the heart of the city. Be aware that you will have to pass through mainland China border patrol.

Business Culture & Etiquette

Hong Kong is the very definition of a 21st-century city, with a slick, almost science-fiction, atmosphere mirroring the way locals do business.

Time is a precious commodity in Hong Kong and wasting a single second is considered a business faux pas. Be punctual for meetings and get straight to the point – HKers hugely appreciate brevity that packs a punch.

Formality is also a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s business culture. Opt for conservative business attire: Suits are standard for men, while tailored skirts or trousers paired with blouses are appropriate for women. Flashy jewellery or overly casual attire can be seen as disrespectful.

It is common for business in Hong Kong to be conducted over formal dinner meetings. In these scenarios, the host typically orders, and it’s considered polite to decline multiple times before accepting additional food or drinks. This demonstrates humility and respect for their hospitality

Here are a few other top business tips:

    • A business card exchange is a customary greeting ritual in Hong Kong. Present your card with both hands and take a moment to examine your counterpart’s card before putting it away.
    • Understanding some basic Cantonese phrases goes a long way. A simple “thank you” (多謝, do jeh) or “you’re welcome” (唔使客, m bud sihk hak) can show your respect for the local culture and create a positive impression.

Crime & Safety

Hong Kong boasts an impressive safety record, with a very low overall crime rate. According to the Hong Kong Police Force’s 2022 crime statistics, overall reported crimes decreased by 8.7% compared to 2021. However, petty theft, particularly pickpocketing and bag snatching, can occur in crowded areas like tourist attractions and public transportation.

Large-scale protests have been a concern in Hong Kong in recent years. However, these have become less frequent. It’s always wise to stay informed about current events and avoid any large gatherings that appear tense. If you encounter a protest, stay calm and move away from the area to avoid getting caught up in it.

Here are a few of our other top safety tips:

  • In Hong Kong, the emergency number for police, fire, and ambulance services is 999. English-speaking operators are available.
  • Keep valuables like wallets and passports secure in a money belt or a crossbody bag that stays close to your body. Avoid carrying excessive cash or displaying expensive jewellery.

Getting Around Hong Kong

Mass Transit Railway (地下鐵路)

The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) lies at the heart of Hong Kong’s public transport system. 11 colour-coded lines cover the entirety of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories, with fares based on distance travelled. The easiest way to purchase a fare is by getting hold of an Octopus Card which can be topped up at most stations – including on the Disneyland Resort Line. Most signage is written in both English and Chinese, so there is little need for translation.

Buses (巴士)

Hong Kong boasts an extensive bus network consisting of various types of service. Officially franchised buses are operated by four major companies which can be discerned by their fleets of red double-deckers: (Kowloon Motor Bus Co., Citybus, New Lantao Bus Company, and Long Win Bus Company). Smaller, green or red minibuses also operate on specific routes at fixed fares. They’re great for short trips and reaching areas not served by franchised buses.

Taxis (的士)

Hong Kong taxis are a convenient and affordable way to get around, especially for short trips or late-night journeys. Red taxis with silver roofs are the most common type, operating in Kowloon and on Hong Kong Island. Green taxis with white roofs serve the New Territories, and Blue taxis are exclusive to Lantau Island. You can call a taxi hotline (+852 8109 2222) to request a pick-up, but there’s an additional charge for this service.

Top 3 Things To See Or Do In Hong Kong

If you find yourself with a bit of free time on your business trip, Hong Kong is an interesting and vibrant city with plenty to explore. Here are our top 3 recommendations…

1. Victoria Peak

Victoria Peak, also known as Mount Austin or simply “The Peak” to locals, is a 552ft (1,811 ft) mountain which affords stunning views of the Hong Kong metropolis.

Though hardy explorers can try to scale the peak on foot, the simplest way to reach the summit is by hopping on the Peak Tram, the oldest funicular railway in Asia, operating since 1888. Once at the top, head to Sky Terrace 428, an observation deck offering 360-degree panoramas of the city skyline, Victoria Harbour, and the surrounding islands.

2. Temple Street Night Market

Temple Street Night Market is a neon maze of intoxicating sights, sounds, and smells and is a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience Hong Kong’s thriving market culture.

Be prepared to bargain – Stall owners love to haggle and your bartering skills will be rewarded. But Temple Street is not just about shopping. The area is renowned for its fortune tellers and live entertainment, with dancers, musicians, magicians and more taking residence.

3. Tian Tan Buddha

The awe-inspiring Tian Tan Buddha statue is the jewel in the crown of Lantau Island.

Sculpted from bronze, the statue is perched atop a mountain and stands as a symbol of peace and tranquillity. When visiting, take a cable car ride up Ngong Ping 360 for breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the South China Sea before visiting the Po Lin Monastery to delve into Buddhist culture.

In Conclusion

Hong Kong is a dynamic metropolis that thrives as a business travel destination.

With a world-class infrastructure, a strategic location in the heart of Asia, and a unique cultural tapestry, there is plenty on offer for intrepid business seekers. The sleek skyscrapers of Central stand as a testament to Hong Kong’s economic prowess, while ancient temples and vibrant street markets offer a glimpse into its rich heritage.

Beyond the world of business deals, Hong Kong provides a wealth of options for exploration and relaxation. Take a thrilling ride on the Peak Tram, marvel at the awe-inspiring Tian Tan Buddha, or immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Temple Street Night Market.

So, whether you’re a seasoned business professional seeking new opportunities or a first-time visitor to Asia, Hong Kong promises an unforgettable experience.

Top 6 Places to Visit as an LGBTQ+ Traveller

featuring Brit Clayton, our new Diversity & Inclusion Manager

Business travel can be a whirlwind of an experience; an exciting – if not occasionally stressful – flow of work meetings, project deadlines, and new places to visit. It’s a lot to think about at the best of times.

However, as an LGBTQ+ professional, travel comes with an extra layer of uncertainty. Though the world is becoming an altogether friendlier and more tolerant place, there are still challenges to overcome and hoops to jump through. Discrimination has yet to be stamped out entirely, legal restrictions are still enforced in some countries, and personal safety can be a concern for those in the LGBTQ+ community who accidentally wade into choppy waters.

So, to celebrate Pride Month 2024, we spoke to our very own Diversity & Inclusion Manager Brit Clayton who gives her top 6 destinations for LGBTQ+ business travellers as told through the prism of her own experiences abroad.

Our D&I Manager Brit Clayton outside of the Stonewall Inn in New York City

New York City holds a significant place in LGBTQ+ history. The Stonewall Inn, located in Greenwich Village, was the epicentre of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which catalysed the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. This area is now designated as the Stonewall National Monument.

NEW YORK

The top things to do for LGBTQ+ travellers in New York:

Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is known for its progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Iceland was one of the first countries to elect an openly gay head of state, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, in 2009. I don’t think I’ve ever felt safter holding a partner’s hand in public than I did in Reykjavik. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever felt safer in any city ever!

San Francisco is often dubbed the “gay capital of the world”. The emergence of the LGBTQ+ community in the city is often attributed to the returning sailors of WWII who settled in the city. For some of those who lived to fight another day and returned home from war, San Francisco was remembered as a friendly port and safe harbour for those not fitting into society’s ideals of heteronormativity. Some of the millions who served decided to stay and establish a new life in the city for fear of returning home due to persecution from family members and their communities.

SAN FRANCISCO

The top things to do for LGBTQ+ travellers in San Francisco:

🏳️‍🌈 The Castro District: The city’s Castro District has been a central hub for LGBTQ+ culture and activism since the 1960s, with Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., as one of its most famous residents. On King’s Day on 27 April and Liberation Day on 5 May, colourful Pink Triangle festivals are held at Westermarkt, which include dances, concerts, performances by artists, drag queens, and so on.

🏳️‍🌈 Vondelpark: Relax in this expansive park, a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

🏳️‍🌈 IHLIA LGBT Heritage: Explore the world’s largest LGBTQ+ archive and library, located in the Amsterdam Public Library.

Amsterdam has been a pioneer in LGBTQ+ rights, being the capital City of the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001. Its open-minded and liberal attitude has made it a favourite destination for LGBTQ+ travellers for decades.

Barcelona is a vibrant and progressive city that has long been a magnet for the LGBTQ+ community. Spain legalized same-sex marriage in 2005, and Barcelona has since become one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in Europe. The city’s rich artistic and cultural heritage, combined with its welcoming atmosphere, makes it a top destination for LGBTQ+ travellers.

🏳️‍🌈 Tandem Bar: Simply put the best cocktail I’ve ever had in my life. Not a gay bar but a traditional Catalonian cocktail bar. No menus but the mixologists can make you any drink you like or are happy to recommend. Please don’t tell too many people of this wonderful place.

Queer Heritage Tours: Discover Brighton’s LGBTQ+ history through guided tours exploring significant sites and stories.

Brighton is often referred to as the “gay capital of the UK.” It has a long-standing reputation as a haven for the LGBTQ+ community, dating back to the early 20th century when it became a popular destination for artists and bohemians.

In Conclusion

These destinations offer more than just acceptance; they celebrate the rich tapestry of the LGBTQ+ community. Whether through historical landmarks, vibrant festivals, or inclusive spaces, each city provides a unique and welcoming experience for LGBTQ+ travellers. The use and effectiveness of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) remains one of the hottest topics in business travel. Back in 28 November 2023, Virgin Atlantic successfully operated Flight100 - the world's first commercial SAF flight from London to New York. In this article we extract the key findings of the ground-breaking feat as outlined in the Executive Summary produced by the team behind it all.

Flight100: Testing the Limits of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

reviewing Virgin Atlantic's historic flight from London to New York

The use and effectiveness of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) remains one of the hottest topics in business travel. Debates surrounding its implementation into the mainstream persist: Is the fuel cost-effective? Will it perform as well as its conventional, carbon-coughing counterpart? Are the environmental benefits as miraculous as some of its champions insist?

To answer these questions, and to further the scientific cause, Virgin Atlantic successfully operated the world’s first commercial SAF flight from London to New York on 28 November 2023. The Boeing 787-9, dubbed Flight100 as a nod to the 100% sustainable fuel that powered its Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, was deemed a step forward in Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to decarbonising the travel industry.

Recently, the team at Virgin Atlantic published the results of their groundbreaking feat in an Executive Summary of Flight100, its opening gambit on the title page a swipe at the naysayers: “‘Sustainable Flight is Too Difficult’. Challenge Accepted”.

In this article, we take a deeper look at Virgin Atlantic’s Flight100 findings and give an overview of the key takeaways that could shape the future of SAF.

WHAT IS SAF?

SAF stands for Sustainable Aviation Fuel. It is produced from renewable resources such as wood chips, agricultural waste, or other biomass as an alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based aviation fuels. It is considered to be greener because it has a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional aviation fuels.

The 100% SAF Operated With Equivalent Safety to Traditional Jet A-1 Aviation Fuel

Flight100 used a 100% SAF fuel blend of 87% HEFA-SPK2 made from waste fats and sourced from Air bp in the EU and 13% dextrose-based SAK3 from Virent Inc. in the US.

This SAF blend did not qualify as fuel for use in commercial aviation by the ASTM, the body that governs the international technical standard for aviation fuel.

As a result, Flight100 could not operate under normal circumstances. It required a one-off approval for a non-commercial Permit to Fly from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and overflight approvals from Irish, Canadian, and American civil aviation authorities.

Once approved, a ground test of the engines was conducted to test the performance of SAF compared to normal Jet A-1 fuel. After 4 hours of testing different thrust settings, it was established that performance was equivalent across both fuels.

Then a ground test of the auxiliary power unit (APU) was performed to evaluate the adverse effects caused by the 100% SAF blend. An internal inspection of the APU found there to be no identifiable signs of damage or leakage caused by the Flight100 fuel.

Key Takeaways
  • The flight demonstrated that a widebody long-haul aircraft using 100% SAF could operate at the same level of safety as traditional fossil fuel flights.
  • No modification needed to be made to the airframe, engines, or any other components.

Key Takeaways
  • SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 70% when compared to fossil-derived Jet A-1.
  • SAF has a material impact on lifecycle emissions but does not remove it fully.

The Flight Saw a 64% Reduction in CO2e When Compared to a Standard Journey From London

The use of renewable or carbon recycling waste products, as used in the 100% SAF blend of Flight100, delivered a reduction in end-to-end carbon emissions when compared to fossil fuels.

The Flight100 team conducted a comparative CO2e end-to-end Lifecycle Assessment (LCA), using 49 Boeing 787-9s flights between London Heathrow and New York JFK as a baseline to understand the typical carbon emission profile in tonnes. This included the emissions caused by passenger journeys to the airport, cargo activities, and fuel burn.

This baseline CO2e profile came in at 154 tonnes – of which 96% relate to Jet A-1 use. Comparatively, the use of Flight100 SAF reduced CO2e by 95 tonnes – a 64% reduction from the baseline. This includes not just the use of SAF but also the operational efficiencies that were implemented on the day such as replacing single-use plastic wraps on blankets in Premium and Economy cabins with a paper band.

However, a detailed LCA of the environmental impact of the trialled in-flight efficiencies, namely the trade-off between using renewable materials and the waste caused by them, uncovered a surprising result. The paper blanket wraps had a higher carbon footprint than the products they replaced. Plus, replacing plastic cups with a reusable alternative would contribute an additional 345 tonnes of CO2e per year due to extra weight causing a 5.5x increase in fuel burn.

There was a 4.4% Reduction in SAF Use due to Fuel Efficiency Initiatives

Flight100 aimed to maximise the benefits of SAF by materially reducing other environmental impacts compared to burning fossil fuels.

While the primary focus of Flight100 was to test the safety and usability of 100% SAF, the team also wanted to build on efficiency measures to reduce fuel burn on the ground and in the air.

By reducing the weight of the flight, reducing taxi time, implementing a continuous descent arrival, and more, Flight100 delivered 2.2 tonnes of fuel savings. While these savings are small when compared to those possible by implementing SAF into future fleets, they were still responsible for a 4.4% reduction in overall fuel burn – that equates to 4,700 tonnes of fuel savings (or 18,000 tonnes of CO2e)

Working closely with Air Traffic Management (ATM) at every stage of the flight was another key element in driving fuel efficiency. When taken together, ATM-controlled activities delivered a huge 70% of the registered fuel efficiency gains, whether that be through optimised flight routing or continuous climb and descent.

The Flight100 team acknowledged that the flight was prioritised both in the sky and on the ground which helped deliver such positive results – indeed they conceded that not having this priority would have likely increased the logged emissions.

Key Takeaways
  • Flight100 delivered 2.2 tonnes of fuel-savings through 9 in-flight and on-ground fuel efficiency initiatives.
  • These additional efficiencies contributed to a 4.4% reduction in overall fuel burn – that equates to 4,700 tonnes of fuel savings on a LHR to JFK route.

The reduction of CO2e when using Flight100 SAF compared to Jet A-1 fuel – a 95 tonnes difference.

Tonnes of additional CO2e emissions when using paper blanket wrap alternatives across the product lifecycle.

The reduction of particulates from using Flight100 SAF when compared to Jet A-1 Fuel.

%

Key Takeaways
  • Flight100 used a total of 34.6 tonnes of SAF on the route between London Heathrow and New York JFK, around 1% more efficient than the 34.95 tonnes of Jet A-1 a traditional flight would need.
  • Flight100 SAF blend saw a 40% reduction in the size and number of particulates when compared to Jet A-1.

SAF Produced 40% Fewer Particulates Compared to Jet A-1 Fuel

Led by Imperial College London and Sheffield University, an analysis of particulate emissions was carried out to see what non-CO2 impacts were caused as a result of SAF use.

Through lab testing 100% SAF through a “proxy engine” to simulate real-life fuel combustion, scientists were able to measure the emission of particulates such as sulphur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Using Jet A-1 and 100% HEFA fuels as a comparison with the Flight100 SAF blend, the tests suggested a reduction in both the number and size of particulate emissions. Indeed, HEFA showed a 70% reduction in the number of particulates when compared to Jet A-1 and the Flight100 blend a 40% reduction

In addition to these findings, Flight100 SAF showed a 1% calorific value increase in energy measurement tests when compared to Jet A-1. What this points to is: a) potentially less fuel would be needed to power flights and; b) a reduction in CO2e emissions beyond fuel savings due to improved energy output.

A 1% margin might sound small, but it represents a saving of approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2e in the context of the worldwide SAF target of 10% by 2030. In the case of the Flight100 route from London to New York, this 1% equated to around 0.35 less tonnes of fuel used.

In Conclusion

The evaluation of Flight100 demonstrated that using 100% SAF instead of traditional fossil fuels can be viable in the future. However, this viability comes with a few caveats: SAF alternatives need to be readily available to use and affordable for airlines.

In this sense, Flight100 showed that the key challenges surrounding the adoption of SAF are not operational – the 40% reduction in particulates and 64% reduction in CO2e production when compared to Jet A-1 fuel is a convincing argument for this claim.

In the meantime, Virgin Atlantic has committed to a 15% net reduction in CO2e emissions by 2030, a pledge which also includes operating 10% of their fleeton SAF.

Colloquially named “The Second City” for its historic rivalry with New York City, Chicago is more than a match for its world-famous counterpart. A booming business scene, underpinned by The Loop business district (the second-largest of its kind in North America), is a testament to the city’s economic clout, while picture-postcard views across the Chicago River give a glimpse into the softer side of Illinois.

Chicago is the perfect place to test the balance between work and play. Beyond the boardrooms and tech haven along the River North, you’ll find the iconic Navy Pier with its Ferris wheel crown, the architectural delights of Millenium Park commanded by the ultra-polished Cloud Gate sculpture, and the 110-year-old Wrigley Field home of the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball team.

Come the evening, you’ll be spoilt for choice amid the bustle of traditional jazz clubs and stunning rooftop bars offering sweeping views across the patchwork of buildings old and new. Those craving a bigger slice of Chicago’s culture can tuck into a delicious deep-dish pizza – a style developed in the city in the early 1940s.

In this comprehensive guide to Chicago for business travellers, we delve deeper into navigating the city’s unique corporate landscape, offer our top tips for getting around, and pick out our top 3 things to see or do to make your trip unforgettable.

Getting To Chicago

By Air

Chicago has two major airports: O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on the northwest side of the city, approximately 17 miles (27 kilometres) from The Loop, and Midway International Airport (MDW) located 12 miles (19 kilometres) away in the southeast. Both handle flights from all over the world.

By Road

Chicago sits at the convergence of several major interstate highways, making it easily accessible. The I-90 (Kennedy Expressway), I-94 (Dan Ryan Expressway), I-55 (Stevenson Expressway), I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway), and I-294 (Tri-State Tollway) all intersect within the city limits.

By Train

Chicago Union Station acts as a central hub for Amtrak, the national passenger rail service in the United States, connecting the city to major locations throughout the Midwest and beyond. Metra, a separate commuter rail system, complements Amtrak by providing connections to Chicago’s suburbs.

Business Culture & Etiquette

Chicago boasts a vibrant business scene defined by a direct communication style and friendly Midwestern charm.

First and foremost, Chicagoans value efficiency and getting things done. Business communication tends to be clear, concise, and to the point. Don’t be surprised by a more direct approach in meetings or negotiations – it’s seen as a sign of respect for everyone’s time.

Chicago’s business attire leans towards professional yet comfortable. Think “smart casual.” Tailored trousers, a button-down shirt, or a well-fitting dress are generally appropriate. Suits are still worn in more formal settings, but a blazer can do the trick most of the time.

Here are a few other top business tips:

    • Chicago is fiercely proud of its deep-dish pizza. If the opportunity arises, embrace the local delicacy and participate in the deep-dish vs. thin-crust debate.
  •
    • Chicago is a die-hard sports town. Knowing a bit about the Bears, Bulls, Cubs, or Blackhawks can spark conversation and create a sense of camaraderie.

Crime & Safety

Chicago has developed an unfortunate reputation as being a city with a higher-than-average rate of violent crime, with a Gallup poll in 2023 showing that only 27% of Chicagoans considered the city safe

However, this is largely due to organised gang activity. Visitors to Chicago are unlikely to encounter any serious crime during their visit, particularly if they remain in the central metropolitan areas such as the Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park, and the Loop. Indeed, Chicago is a bustling tourist destination deemed safe by governments across the globe.

Here are a few of our other top safety tips:

  • In Chicago, as throughout the US, the emergency number for police, fire, and ambulance services is 911.
  • Keep your valuables close, especially in crowded areas. Consider a money belt or a crossbody bag that keeps your belongings secure against pickpockets.

Getting Around Chicago

The Chicago “L”

The Chicago “L” is an elevated train network.  Eight train lines comprise the “L” system, each designated by a distinct colour: Brown, Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, and Yellow. They run frequently, especially during peak hours, and you can typically expect a train to arrive every 5-10 minutes. Fares can be paid for individually or with a Ventra farecard.

Buses

Over 140 bus routes crisscross the city and most destinations can be reached by bus. Operated by the Chicago Transport Authority (CTA), bus trips are affordable and can be planned in real time using the CTA Ventra mobile app. Several routes also form a comprehensive night bus network that run 24/7. These can be found at stops on transport maps designated by the prefix “N”.

Divvy Bike Sharing

Divvy, Chicago’s bike-sharing system, is an affordable way to explore the city on two wheels. Hundreds of Divvy stations are spread across the city, with over 800 docking points (as of 2022). You can get a daily, 3-day, or annual membership, or simply pay for a single ride if you’re a casual user. Rates are generally affordable, with single rides costing around $3.

Top 3 Things To See Or Do In Chicago

If you find yourself with a bit of free time on your business trip, Chicago is an interesting and vibrant city with plenty to explore. Here are our top 3 recommendations…

3. Navy Pier

Navy Pier is an iconic sight on the shores of the stunning Lake Michigan. Built in 1916, Navy Pier was originally designed as a shipping and recreation facility. Now it is a waterfront entertainment complex featuring an amusement park (home to the city’s famous Ferris wheel), a regular schedule of live comedy and music performances, and a wide range of restaurants and eateries.

For those looking to explore more of Lake Michigan, sightseeing cruises depart from Navy Pier, taking passengers on a journey which offers stunning views of the Chicago skyline.

In Conclusion

Chicago thrives as a business travel destination, offering a dynamic blend of big-city energy, world-class infrastructure, and a vibrant cultural scene. Its central location in the United States makes it easily accessible from both coasts, while O’Hare International Airport opens the gates to flights worldwide.

Beyond its commercial prowess, Chicago provides a wealth of options to unwind and explore after a productive day. Delegates can delve into the city’s renowned art scene at the Art Institute, relax in Millennium Park’s scenic green spaces, or savour a traditional deep-dish pizza.

So, whether you’re a seasoned professional attending a conference or a novice business traveller seeking a new adventure, the so-called “Windy City” offers more than enough to guarantee a productive and unforgettable experience.

I can find it cheaper on the Internet

How often have you heard that?

American Airlines announced in February 2024 that it would require travel agencies and online booking tools to connect directly to their channel or lose access to up to 50% of fares with travellers no longer receiving Advantage points on bookings. Many in the industry scrambled to meet AA’s target with constant cries of not being “NDC-ready.”

Gray Dawes has been presenting clients with NDC content for almost six years, and it was no surprise that we smashed American Airlines’ target of 30% for bookings made directly on their NDC channel in the US. In fact, we achieved nearly 45% by the airline’s May deadline!

As an early adopter of NDC, Gray Dawes is the largest adopter of British Airways NDC content and the second largest adopter of Lufthansa NDC content. We’re also making great strides with Air France KLM as more and more airlines adopt this modern retailing platform.

With no restrictions to a single GDS, we deliver content from recognised travel retailers, such as Expedia Group, Premier Inn and Booking.com, alongside direct connections to airlines, hotels and global rail suppliers And it’s all beautifully presented in our single booking tool YourTrip, no matter where in the world you are.

It’s what we call ‘𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓’. Empowering our clients with the freedom of choice, giving them everything they need to book better, spend less and travel smarter.

And we never hear “I can find it cheaper myself on the internet.”

Do you?

NEW DISTRIBUTION CAPABILITY (NDC)

Get access to a greater choice of enriched air content without the hassle of shopping around.

NDC was developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) back in October 2012, revolutionising the way in which air travel content was distributed and purchased. Gray Dawes were one of the early adopters of the standard. It allows us to put our customers at the very centre of the travel experience and saves them from the hassle of trawling through innumerable sources to find the air products they are looking for.

The numbers speak for themselves –  82% of fares are on routes flown by NDC airlines, and a third of what we sell is cheaper than a traditional TMC.

Tarring everyone with the same brush only serves to devalue the brilliant work and innovative thinking that organisations such as ours bring to the industry. In this article, we take a deeper look at the “Value Proposition” piece from the Business Travel Magazine and demonstrate how we are genuinely doing things differently.
